- Working closely with Senator Conroy to influence the need to rapidly develop the Digital Economy as the value-added return for the $43 billion NBN investment – driving focus on investment in the applications from our sector that will underpin the future prosperity of Australia.
- Successful advocacy with DEWHA for a national implementation of an industry-driven computer equipment take-back and recycling scheme – making our industry a leader in corporate social responsibility.
- Significant influence on re-drafting of R&D tax amendments that threatened a hugely detrimental impact on the ICT sector – providing improvement of business terms that relate to hundreds of millions of dollars in ICT investment.
- Running more than 80 industry events each year across all mainland states and territories – providing outstanding networking opportunities for members and rated as the best networking events in the industry.
- Playing a central role in the rollout of the Federal Government’s Gershon ICT Reform strategies – ensuring that industry consultation and engagement is given high priority during the implementation phase.
- Establishment of the National ICT Careers Week as an annual event promoting a positive focus on the work opportunities across our industry – improving ICT career attractiveness and helping arrest the decline in ICT higher education course enrolments.

Growing the local ICT industry
With 82 per cent of AIIA’s members small-to-medium enterprises, developing a thriving Australian ICT industry that growsrapidly into the future is a priority for the association and its members.
AIIA’s approach to industry growth includes nurturing a business culture that supports collaboration; advancing export opportunities to help companies succeed in global markets; working with government to ensure all companies can compete for government work on a level playing field; driving ready access to investment and capital; and fostering a policy environment that values entrepreneurship.
Developing the ICT workforce
Skilled people are the most important component of the ICT industry as they provide the genesis, implementation, and support for the technologies delivered by the ICT industry.
With a strong reputation for successfully advocating ICT workforce issues, AIIA collaborates with government, education institutions and other industry groups to advocate excellence in education and workforce policy, ensure relevance in ICT curricula and encourage young people, mature age people and women to join the ICT workforce.
Building infrastructure
As broadband connectivity makes rapid improvements to economic and social well-being to people around the globe, AIIA wants to ensure Australian businesses have access to world-class broadband infrastructure that places the nation as a leading innovator and knowledge economy in the borderless world.

Shaping the business environment
AIIA provides a collective voice for our industry, offering an industry-wide position on a diverse range of issues affecting AIIA members, the broader ICT community and ultimately, the Australian economy.
With more than 30 years leading the ICT industry, AIIA has established a powerful lobbying force for AIIA members to influence and shape Australia's business environment. AIIA’s Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer and Government Business Taskforce meet regularly in Canberra with ministers, shadow ministers and other key decision-makers to ensure industry concerns gain high priority with both the government and opposition.
Going green
In addition to examining and taking measure to reduce our own industry footprint, companies in the ICT Industry are also championing the transformational role of ICT in a low-carbon economy by looking at ways to assist other industries to meet the challenge of lowering their overall environmental footprint.
AIIA is currently involved with a number of sustainability projects and programs, including working closely with government to implement national e-Waste legislation by February 2011.
